Why is chiropractic a preferred choice for the conservative care of spine related pain? A recent Harvard Health Publications article (a division of Harvard Medical School) discussed the role of chiropractic care in the management of pain. The discussion of chiropractic began with the premise that chiropractic is a health care system that considers the structure of the body and particularly the spine as an important determinate of the function of every other part of the body.
This statement provides a great context for the nature of chiropractic care. Spinal motion and posture can easily influence how well nerves do their job. If you’ve ever suffered from a “pinched” nerve, you know how painful nerve pressure can be. The reality of nerve pressure is that a comparatively small portion of the nervous system can actually sense pain. The majority of nerves control function, whether muscle function or internal organ function, so unobstructed nerves are important to more than just pain. The problem for most of us is that unless we feel pain, we don’t consider that we may have a problem. When you visit your dentist, you often go for routine checkups and teeth cleanings. Occasionally, the checkup reveals a cavity which hadn’t caused you any pain (yet!). Common sense dictates that the dentist addresses the issue BEFORE the cavity gets deep enough to hit a nerve.
Nerve pressure from spinal motion problems can certainly create pain, but most of the time the pressure on nerves doesn’t get to the 20% of nerves that sense pain. Spinal nerve pressure can be detected by a chiropractor before the pressure becomes significant enough to cause pain. If you are scheduling with us because of a painful condition, or if you’d like to get a checkup to see if you have nerve pressure, we’ll look forward to meeting with you!
