If you’re a new patient , here’s what you can expect as we partner with you to find the best avenue for pain relief.
1. Referrals and insurance
One question often asked before patients make their first appointment is “Do I need a referral from my doctor?” We gladly accept medical referrals—we want to work hand-in-hand with your primary care physician and will maintain open communication—but a referral isn’t necessary for you to make an appointment; chiropractors are considered as primary care physicians in all 50 states.
Our office will do its best to optimize your insurance benefits. Many new health insurance plans have provisions for chiropractic care, but even if yours does not, we will work to help keep your treatment “home-budget friendly.”
If you have questions about insurance or costs, give Colin (our Greenville, SC office insurance expert!) a call at 864-292-6777 and he’ll help you find the best solutions for your unique situation.
2. Health history
We want to get a picture of your current health state, so we’ll ask you to fill out a health history before your first meeting with Dr. Mruz. You can do this in our office before your appointment, or you can simply download the form available here on this page and fill it out at home before you arrive.
If you don’t know all of the information, that’s fine—we’ll review the information with you and help you fill in the gaps. But this form helps us know where to start.
3. Initial exam
Your first meeting at our office in Greenville with Dr. Mruz will include an exam to help diagnose the source of your pain. Unlike some models of practice, we don’t treat you until we know your pain will respond to chiropractic care.
For example, if your pain is caused by a simple muscle strain, we will offer advice on stabilization and home care. But if the pain is caused by nerve or joint issues, chiropractic can be extremely effective. We want to make sure treatment will be worth your time!
During this exam, we will also want to check for any (rare) conditions that would make chiropractic a poor choice. Occasionally we will need to take x-rays to pinpoint the cause of a problem.
4. “First-aid” pain relief
We don’t want anyone to walk out of our office without some sort of pain relief. We will do what we can to treat you in a way that’s appropriate to the cause of your pain—whether that’s an initial therapeutic activity, a topical analgesic, or some sort of bracing.
5. Trial period
If we determine that the source of your pain is likely to respond well to chiropractic care, then we’ll set up a visit or two to see if chiropractic provides motion improvement and pain relief. At the end of these visits, Dr. Mruz will talk with you about whether you can move forward with treatment.
In other words, we recommend care when we have evidence that chiropractic is working for you.
If after these trial visits we don’t notice any change, we’ll talk with you about other options including additional diagnostic testing, other forms of treatment, whether through our office or a referral to another provider. We maintain relationships with many medical providers and specialists.
6. Patient-directed care
If you decide that chiropractic care is a good fit for you, then Dr. Mruz will provide you with a plan of action. Treatment varies from patient to patient based on your condition and your goals.
It’s important to note that we believe in a partnership between doctor and patient. You are not locked into a plan or contract. We end treatment when you feel you have reached your goals.
Many patients do continue chiropractic care after their pain is gone because they appreciate benefits such as injury prevention and reduction of everyday stiffness, and for our athletes, performance enhancement. That decision is always entirely up to you.
