Back pain is a huge problem!

Here in the U.S., we spend more than $100 billion per year on back pain. Back pain is also the second leading cause of visits to the doctor and hospitalizations.
That’s a lot of pain, and a lot of money. The good news is that chiropractic can help reduce pain while saving money! I’ve summarized a few studies below. These studies show that chiropractic care actually can reduce pain and save money:

A study referenced in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics in the year 2000 evaluated one month outcomes for Oregon area patients with chronic low back pain. The Chiropractic patients showed five times greater improvement than medical patients treated with anti-inflammatory drugs. Ninety percent of chiropractic patients claimed satisfaction with their care, compared to fifty-two percent of medical patients.
A study in 2003 from the British Medical Journal revealed that Chiropractic was more effective at treating neck pain, at a cost of about one-third less than physiotherapy or general practitioner care. Effectiveness was rated based upon fastest recovery rate, fewer lost work days, and lower direct and indirect costs reported one year after therapy.
Medicare beneficiaries who used chiropractic care for spine related pain had an average Medicare pay out of $4,426 for all Medicare services. Those beneficiaries who used other types of providers for their spine care had an average Medicare payment of $8,103 for all Medicare services…an 83% greater spend! The source of this study was Muse and Associates, 2001; “Utilization, Cost and Effects of Chiropractic Care on Medicare Program Costs.”
A 2004 article from the Archives of Internal Medicine reported on a four year retrospective review of claims from 1.7 million health plan members. The study revealed that back pain patients with chiropractic coverage had lower total annual health care costs than those without such coverage. Back pain patients with chiropractic coverage also had fewer hospitalizations, fewer back surgeries, MRI’s and radiographs. Back pain episode related costs were 25% lower for those individuals with chiropractic coverage.

Chiropractic offers a unique approach to health care.

As a chiropractor, I focus on diagnosing and treating joint-related conditions. The most common conditions I treat at Eastside Chiropractic are:

  • headaches
  • joint pain
  • neck pain
  • lower back pain
  • sciatica
  • osteoarthritis
  • tendonitis
  • sprains and strains
  • TMJ dysfunction

I treat these conditions by manipulating or adjusting the dysfunctional joints and by prescribing associated therapy and rehabilitation to promote joint strength and healing.
My first goal as a chiropractor is to help my patients get out of pain as quickly as possible. My second goal is to allow my patients to return to their daily activities as quickly as possible. While medications can also provide effective pain relief, often medications require patients to reduce their daily activities (as evidenced by the warnings on many prescription drug labels).
If you have been suffering with chronic pain, perhaps it is time to try chiropractic. I would be honored to have you visit our office to see if chiropractic care can help you!
